The parents whose children are served by MCCP are the working poor. To make ends meet, they often have to work multiple jobs without health benefits. These families are uninsured or are pending eligibility for Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS) or FAMIS Plus. They have incomes of less than 250% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines (for example, a family of four with household incomes less than $51,625 qualify).
Living in Northern Virginia is expensive. Families without insurance are often forced to choose between medical care, food or rent. Emergency room visits are expensive, so children’s illnesses are not treated until they become serious. Because they are sicker, children miss more school and parents miss more work. Lost workdays translate into lower paychecks for parents.
MCCP eases the financial burden on these hard working families. Children who receive timely preventative attend school more regularly, enabling their parents to be more reliable employees. Having dependable, affordable health care is a solid step on the road to financial security for Fairfax County families.
